. Understand and keep in mind the depth of competition in this largest engineering entrance examination in India with more than ten lakh students competing

. The larger the size of the competing field, the more critical every single question becomes 

– in all three possibilities – getting it right, getting it wrong and deciding not to attempt the question.

. The time window of three hours is adequate for the students to see and read the questions in all subjects.

. There can be questions with differential marking. As a thumb rule, the more marks assigned to a question the more difficult it is likely to be. It could also call for use of multiple concepts or should take more time to solve using long-winding steps.

. Identify the nature of the question, assess the difficulty levels and then decide if you are comfortable dealing with that kind of complexity.

. If you are not sure of the time you will take to solve the question, leave it for the end and deal with it after you have tackled the ‘easy’ questions.

. When it comes to macro level time-management, leave 15 minutes before finishing time to deal with the difficult questions.

. The logic for this is - you have already invested a bit of your time in these questions and, therefore, you have a better than average chance of getting these correct

. Do not budget more than 50 minutes per subject in the initial time allocation process.

. It is not a good idea to juggle between questions in different subject areas within the test-taking time.

. What you decide to do first – physics, chemistry or mathematics – is your choice. Once you have made this decision – based on multiple factors like your liking for the subject, level of difficulty assigned to that particular subject on the exam day based on your initial assessment during the first ten minutes etc, do not change the plan.

. One of the most common mistakes is changing the larger plan within the test span. Remember that the window of three hours does not give you the liberty to shift gears often. You have to respect your judgement at the start and then stick to the same.

. For this reason, concentrate on the question booklet in the first 10 minutes to minutely scan the entire paper.
